After Making Game-Winner, DeMarcus Cousins Goes Off
The Sacramento Kings have been a prominent subject of the NBA rumor mill lately because of reports that they are considering firing head coach Ty Corbin and hiring George Karl to replace him. DeMarcus Cousins has gotten roped into these stories, with multiple reports that he is against the Karl hiring. For instance, here is USA Today on Saturday:
Cousins' day-to-day agent, Jarrin Akana, worked with Karl in Denver and was re-assigned from assistant coach to scout when Karl took over for coach Jeff Bzdelik in 2005. Dan Fegan, Cousins' lead agent, represented Karl's son, Coby, as a player for years before he was eventually replaced. That circle, by all accounts, has been against the notion of adding Karl.
Earlier Sunday, Cousins's agents began to push back against the notion:
After nailing a crazy game-winner against Phoenix tonight, a reporter in the scrum asked Cousins something about being pumped up (the question isn't captured). Here's Cousins's response, and its a doozy:
Transcript:
Nah I ain't pumped up. I just got a lot on my mind. And the crazy thing about it ... I just got a question for y'all. How are you gonna stop God's plan? How are you gonna do that? How are you gonna do that, that's what I want to know, how are you gonna stop God's plan? Man this city done put me through so much, and I stayed loyal to it the whole time. Hey, I just wanna know how you gonna stop God's plan? God gives his hardest battles to his strongest soldiers. The marathon continues. I'm out.
Athletes are usually quick to tell you that they don't pay attention to the media and that things like trade rumors don't bother them, but true to his heart-on-his-sleeve personality, Boogie isn't having any of that. The Kings aren't good, the head coach he liked was fired, and now he's supposedly the sticking point in the team's latest drama. He may have just won his team a game, but the man has a lot on his mind. Cousins is signed with Sacramento through 2018, so there'll surely be plenty more drama to come from this uneasy partnership.
Update: I originally misheard "God's plan" as "gossip." The transcript has been corrected, and the final paragraph has been tweaked.
