Athletic Bilbao Robbed Of Equalizer From Goalkeeper, Lose To Malaga
Athletic Bilbao appeared to steal a tie from the jaws of defeat with a goal in stoppage time off a set-piece header from their keeper, Gorka Iraizoz. After the initial frenzy, it was disallowed for no apparent reason. Malaga hung on to win, 1-0.
Malaga led Athletic 1-0 since the 34th minute and were playing two men down, so with time running out, Athletic stacked the deck some more and brought the keeper up for the set piece. Iraizoz hit a header that just glanced off his counterpart's hand and in for the would-be equalizer. It was almost immediately disallowed—with nothing that jumped out on the play and no clear explanation given why—leaving the broadcasters (including a temporarily speechless Ray Hudson) feeling like Athletic got ripped off.
It's been suggested that Aritz Aduriz was offside but even Malaga manager Javi Gracia wasn't sure it should have been disallowed. You better be damned sure something went wrong if you're disallowing a goalkeeper's goal.
