The craziest basketball game of the year just finished in Saint Peter, Minnesota. Waseca High School and Marshall High School faced-off this evening for the Minnesota Section 2AAA boys basketball championship, with the winner advancing to the state tournament.
Our story begins with five seconds left in regulation, with Waseca up three and on the free throw line. A make would’ve sealed it, but the free throw shooter missed, and Marshall hit a three at the buzzer to force overtime:
Two clutch free throws sent the game to a second overtime, where a Marshall player apparently pulled a HAVLICEK STOLE THE BALL, and sent the game to a third overtime:
This is when things graduated from crazy to bonkers. Down three with just one second left, Waseca was totally screwed. But then, somehow, Nick Dufault—the coach’s kid (Correction: coach’s nephew)—hit a nearly full-court three-pointer to send the game to a fourth overtime:
Finally, after making it to the fourth overtime by the hair of their chinny chin chin, Waseca hit a buzzer-beating three to advance to the state tournament:
