Buffalo Bills Off to Perfect Start: Can Josh Allen End Super Bowl Drought?
The NFL season is entering its third week and we all know not to get too impressed by a 2-0 start.
So the Buffalo Bills won both their games. Yawn. They were fortunate to win the first of those two, but few folks are surprised to see Buffalo at 2-0.
We’re not throwing out Super Bowl invitations after two weeks.
Now let’s pause to allow fans of the Indianapolis Colts to be very excited by their team’s 2-0 start. They were all in fear that Anthony Richardson would be the quarterback and quickly derail the 2025 season.
Kinda crazy to hear: “Sure glad Daniel Jones is our quarterback!”
You’d be hard pressed to find anyone in the Buffalo metropolitan area who isn’t glad that Josh Allen is the quarterback of the Bills.
The reigning MVP has become as popular as Niagara Falls and he is now in his eighth season of his stellar career. He has thrown for 197 touchdowns and rushed for a franchise-record 67.
Allen showed early in his career that leadership wouldn’t be a problem. But some of his risky throws were a concern.
He learned to harness his aggressiveness, and last season he was intercepted just six times while throwing 28 touchdown passes. He was the rightful winner of the MVP award over Baltimore Ravens star Lamar Jackson.
Those two stellar signal callers shared the field in Week 1, and it looked like Jackson would be the one celebrating when the matchup was over.
The Ravens led by 15 points before Allen pulled off a late comeback that would even impress John Elway.
The Bills scored 16 unanswered points in the final 3:56 to register a dramatic 41-40 victory. Allen finished 33-of-46 passing for 394 yards and two touchdowns, and also rushed for two scores for the Bills.
Buffalo then routed the New York Jets 30-10 in Week 2 and now host a totally disheveled Miami Dolphins franchise on Thursday night.
You don’t count victories in the NFL before the game is played, but Miami’s chances of winning stand about curb-high on a 10-foot scale.
The most entertaining part of this matchup might be anticipating whether Dolphins receiver Tyreek Hill will throw a ferocious temper tantrum in the fourth quarter.
Either way, the Bills figure to stack another victory as Allen and his teammates look to push that postseason wall down this season.
The Bills have knocked on the door while making the playoffs in each of the last six seasons under Allen. Last season marked the second time they lost to the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC Championship Game.
The Chiefs could be more vulnerable this season based on their 0-2 start. Yeah, we know not to panic when a team loses twice in a row at the outset of the campaign, but that Kansas City franchise went 15-2 just last season.
And look at the pairing on Nov. 2: Kansas City Chiefs at Buffalo Bills.
That could be a time for the Bills to circle it on the calendar with “home-field advantage” written in black type.
The Chiefs aren’t going away, but a Buffalo win could assure there is no trip to Kansas City in the postseason.
In addition to last season, the Bills had their 2020 and 2021 seasons end in Kansas City. Of course, the Chiefs also ended Buffalo’s 2023 season in Western New York.
But the Bills would really like to avoid a trip to the Midwest in late January. They prefer their own cold, because their rabid fans will be the ones in the stands.
Looking at the schedule, Buffalo has a chance to be 7-0 entering the game in Kansas City. A Monday night game at the Atlanta Falcons is the toughest contest before November.
The Bills already beat the Ravens, so getting a crucial win over Kansas City would aid the home-field advantage bid. Their toughest late-season game will be hosting the defending Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles in Week 17.
So this season could set up the way the Bills need to finally reach the Super Bowl. Those four straight visits (1990-93) during the Jim Kelly era seem ages ago.
And Allen is working hard on ending that drought.
