In Wednesday night’s game against the Red Wings, first overall pick Connor McDavid displayed impressive patience as he toyed with Detroit goalie Petr Mrazek before scoring. McDavid has six points in seven games; Jack Eichel has two through six.
Why bring up Eichel, besides the obvious? McDavid vs. Eichel should be one of the best subplots in the NHL for the next decade-plus. The better 2015 draft pick won’t be determined within a season, and much of their success will be dependent on their teammates, but that won’t stop comparisons when one or the other blows by a defender or stupefies a goalie. When one scores, it’ll be compared to the other’s previous goal, and it’s fun to do so, as long as we don’t take it too seriously. In this endless comparison of highlights between two baby-faced dynamos, everyone wins.
