Cops: Players Shouted "Football Strong!" After Dislocating Man's Brain
Police say the five California University players arrested yesterday on charges they brutally stomped a man outside a Pennsylvania restaurant left the man with brain injuries so severe that " the lower part of his brain has shifted 80 degrees."
Cal forfeited its scheduled game tomorrow against Gannon in the wake of the incident that left 30-year-old Lewis Campbell in intensive care at Allegheny General Hospital. Witnesses told police the five players chanted "football strong" as they fled the scene of the attack.
According to the complaints, one of the players got into an argument with the woman, Shareese Asparagus, 22, of West Chester, outside Spuds restaurant off campus. The chief said she is a student at the university. Mr. Campbell stepped in to defend her and was attacked, police wrote.
An emergency worker told the restaurant owner Campbell had a footprint on his face as he was loaded into the helicopter headed for AGH. Cal was a strong candidate for inclusion in the NCAA Division II playoffs, as the winner of this weekend's game would have taken over first place in the league.
All five players are being held on $500,000 bond, charged with charged with aggravated assault, reckless endangerment, harassment and conspiracy.
