Deadspin's Johnny Manziel Obsession, Visualized

Both the ESPN and NFL Network draft broadcasts Deadspin and Regressing blogrolls were Johnny Football-obsessed tonight last night, but the Worldwide Leader and everyone around here was especially interested in the Heisman-winning Texan. Led by a drooling Jon Gruden a drooling Samer Kalaf and Tim Burke, ESPN Deadspin mentioned Manziel 113 32 times in its 10 draft posts beginning last evening—nearly four eight times as often than any other draftee.

By the numbers, as aggregated from closed captioning having someone count up words in the posts we wrote:

ESPNDeadspin brought up Manziel's name 83 29 times, and referred to people referring to him as "Johnny Football" 30 three more.

The total of 113 32 mentions outpaces that of the top five draft picks every other player drafted combined.

#1 overall pick Jadeveon Clowney came in tied for second with Ha Ha Clinton Dix, earning 29 four mentions on ESPN Deadspin.

The network's blog's longest period of time stretch of posts without mentioning Manziel: 18 minutes, 50 seconds—spanning the first three picks of the draft. Three posts, spanning roughly two and a half hours, informing you that Ha Ha Clinton Dix did not have a joint; making fun of Jets fans; and making fun of an Eagles fan, respectively.

Obviously, there's some survivorship bias here, with Manziel falling to the 22nd pick. However, even simply going by mentions after the player's slot (and ESPN talked about Manziel clean through n0t only his 22nd slot, but basically the entire 23rd slot as well), Manziel racked up 14 mentions after his slot package. Clowney had five, Bortles had four, and each had a good deal longer than Manziel to be mentioned again.

Manziel accounts for 26% 69.6% of all those mentions. (Clowney, as mentioned above, came in second; he earned 7% 8.7%.)

NFL Network Regressing wasn't far behind ESPN Deadspin, with 105 total 13 of the total Manziel mentions (only 12 utterances three references of other people saying "Johnny Football"). But the league's official TV channel data-driven website mentioned the other players more often (Anthony Barr 275% more mentions, Clowney got 13% more 100 percent of his mentions there, as did Bortles, for example 26% more for example).
