Dolphins GM: RB De'Von Achane to play in season opener
Miami Dolphins running back De'Von Achane (28) scores a touchdown after running past New York Jets cornerback Brandin Echols (26) and New York Jets linebacker Jamien Sherwood (44) in the fourth quarter, Sunday January 5, 2025, in East Rutherford. Miami Dolphins running back De'Von Achane is expected to be ready for the season opener against the host Indianapolis Colts on Sept. 7, general manager Chris Grier announced Wednesday.
Achane, who has been battling a calf injury, was held out of the last two preseason contests. He also did not participate in several practices, a decision the team said was precautionary.
"All indications to us is Achane will be ready Week 1," Grier said.
The Dolphins already are thin at running back after Alexander Mattison sustained a season-ending neck injury and Jaylen Wright injured his leg in the preseason. Sixth-round pick Ollie Gordon II is expected to spell Achane in the season opener.
Achane, 23, had 203 carries for 907 yards and six touchdowns, and caught 78 passes on 87 targets for 592 yards and six TDs in 17 regular-season games (16 starts) last season.
As a rookie in 2023, Achane rushed 103 times for 800 yards and eight TDs. He also had 27 receptions for 197 yards and three scores in 11 games (four starts).
Miami selected Achane in the third round of the 2023 NFL Draft.
