The Brewers Hit Two Clutch Dingers To Stay In The Thick Of The Wild Card Chase
Photo: Dylan Buell/ [object Object] The Milwaukee Brewers are the losingest National League team to still be mathematically alive for the postseason, clinging to the very bottom rung of the Wild Card chase with just seven games to go. ESPN gives them just a 16 percent chance of edging into that final spot. It’s all do-or-die from here on in in Milwaukee.
Today the Brewers went into the bottom of the ninth inning against the Cubs having been held to one run over eight innings by a combination of Kyle Hendricks and a couple of bullpen arms. Wade Davis, a perfect 32-0 in save chances in 2017, was on the mound for the Cubs. This was not a real great spot for the Brewers! That is, until Orlando Arcia smoked a dinger down the left field line to tie the game:
Arcia’s clutch dinger would eventually send the game to extras, where the Cubs took a one run lead in the top of the 10th. Cubs manager Joe Maddon sent Davis out there again, after Davis needed just 16 pitches to work the ninth. A one-out Ryan Braun double put the tying run in scoring position with Travis Shaw at the plate:
Brewers win! Brewers win! This kind of meltdown is extraordinarily rare in the career of Wade Davis:
The Brewers will be in must-win mode in every remaining game on their schedule this season. Perhaps Kato Kaelin should take every day off from tweeting about them:
