Evan Mathis Goes In On Chip Kelly
Will I ever get tired of former Eagles players talking shit about Chip Kelly? No, I don’t think I will.
Broncos guard Evan Mathis, whose departure from Philly was particularly acrimonious, is the latest player to take a few hacks at Kelly. He did so in what appears to be a very long and at times rambling email to 9 News’ Mike Klis. The whole thing is worth a read, but here’s what Mathis had to say about ol’ Chip:
“There were many things that Chip had done that showed me he wasn’t building a championship team,” Mathis wrote in his e-mail to 9NEWS. “Two of the main issues that concerned me were: 1. A never-evolving, vanilla offense that forced our own defense to play higher than normal play counts. 2. His impatience with certain personality types even when they were blue-chip talents. The Broncos team I was on would have eaten Chip alive. I don’t think he could have handled the plethora of large personalities.”
The part about Kelly being unable to handle his star players follows the standard line of criticism, but calling Kelly’s offense “vanilla” is a fresh one, and perhaps the meanest thing you can say about a guy whose whole schtick is being an innovator on the offensive end. That’s like looking Guy Fieri dead in his face and telling him he has boring hair.
