Even The Dolphins' Owner Wants To Suck For Luck
The campaign to see no-hope NFL franchises tank the season to better position themselves to draft Stanford's Andrew Luck is not just for fans anymore. The owners of teams that still have more than half of their seasons to finish are getting in on the act, too. Last week, owner Jim Irsay dropped a not-so-subtle hint by indicating the Colts would be willing to draft Luck if given the chance. And now, a "highly placed club source" has told columnist Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald that Dolphins owner Stephen Ross privately understands the benefits of sucking to get Luck:
Ross is so focused on getting his team a franchise quarterback that he has told friends, much as losses pain him in the short-term, he's aware they offer long-term gain because they put Miami in better position to pick Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck in the next draft.
The source also told Salguero that it was Ross who vetoed GM Jeff Ireland's attempts to trade for Kyle Orton over the summer, which actually was a wise move. But Ross, according to multiple sources close to him, per Salguero, also wants a "superstar" head coach or personnel man. This must be really encouraging for coach Tony Sparano and the players who are scheduled to take the field tonight against the Jets, to say nothing of those fans whose tickets for upcoming games this season are already paid for.
