The No. 1 golfer in the world, Scottie Scheffler, was pulled over and detained by law enforcement officials before the start of the PGA Championship this morning.

He was charged with second degree  assault of a police officer, third degree criminal mischief, reckless driving, and disregarding signals from an officer directing traffic. He was released from jail on his own recognition. It’s currently unclear, but doubtful, that he will be able to continue competing in the PGA Championship this weekend as a result of the detainment. Yahoo Sports is reporting that Scheffler is expected to arrive at Valhalla at 9 a.m., where he has a scheduled 10:08 a.m. tee time.

Louisville Metro Police stopped Scheffler while trying to drive into the entrance of Valhalla Golf Club. Traffic outside of the golf club had been stopped because a shuttle bus struck and killed a man around 5 a.m.

Scheffler drove onto the median in an attempt to bypass the accident and traffic stop. Police attempted to pull over Scheffler, who drove another 10 or 20 yards before a police officer attached himself to the golfer’s car.

After rolling down his window and attempting to speak with law enforcement, the officer reportedly aggressively grabbed Scheffler to remove him from the vehicle.

ESPN’s Jeff Darlington was at the scene, and the cops assumed he was a friend or agent of Scheffler.

“There’s nothing you can do,” they told Darlington. “He’s going to jail.”

Scheffler, 27, is riding high off of his victory at The Masters. He had won four of his last five starts.

The start of the second round was delayed after the earlier incident with the shuttle bus, according to ESPN

It was originally slated to start at 7:15 a.m. It will now start at 8:35 a.m.
