France Stunned Spain With A Handball Quarterfinal Buzzer-Beater
Handball's been a bit of a breakout sport for American audiences, though today's quarterfinal between reigning gold medalist France and Spain wasn't aired live in the U.S.. That's a shame, because it was a battle befitting the two pan-sport rivals, one finally seized by the Gauls when William Accambray's rebound shot found the net as the horn sounded to advance his team by a 23-22 score.
The match seemed destined for overtime when Frenchman Nikola Karabatic's shot from the left was saved with seconds left, but Accambray's presence in the paint (do they call it the paint in handball?) left him in prime position to score.
It's the second handball thriller of the day after Hungary's upset of gold-minded Iceland in double overtime. You can watch the full video of both matches here.
