Hot-shooting Suns hand Spurs first loss

Devin Booker had 28 points and 13 assists, Grayson Allen had 17 points and five 3-pointers and the host Phoenix Suns handed the San Antonio Spurs their first loss in a decisive 130-118 victory Sunday.

The Suns built a 31-point lead in the third quarter while throttling Spurs center Victor Wembanyama, who finished with nine points, nine rebounds, four blocked shots and six turnovers. He was 4-of-14 from the field.

Wembanyama entered the game averaging 30.2 points per game while leading the league in rebounds (14.6) and blocked shots (4.8). He had double-doubles in each of the first five games for the Spurs, whose win streak was the longest to begin a season in franchise history.

Ryan Dunn had 17 points, reserve Collin Gillespie had 15 points and Royce O'Neale had 11 points for the Suns. All made three 3-pointers, as did reserve guard Jordan Goodwin.

The Suns shot 58.2% from the field and made 19 of 33 threes (57.6%). They have won two in a row after a four-game losing streak.

Stephon Castle had a season-high 26 points, Keldon Johnson had 19 points and Harrison Barnes had 13 for the Spurs, who had won their first five games by an average of 14.4 points.

The Spurs trimmed the deficit to 14 points at 111-97 on Wembanyama's only 3-pointer of the game to cap a 12-0 run with 6:24 remaining, but they were never closer than that until the final minute.

Wembanyama made his first field goal with 1:05 remaining in the first half and had two points, five rebounds and two blocked shots at half. He did not score in the first and third quarters, attempting two shots in each.

The Spurs shot 45.9% from the field and made 10 of 41 threes. Barnes had three 3-pointers and Castle had two.

The Suns led 102-78 after three quarters. Booker had completed his second double-double of the season by this point, finishing two assists short of tying a career high.

The Suns led 70-52 at halftime, making 11 of their 15 first-half three-point attempts. They had 19 assists on their 24 first-half baskets while shooting 63.2%.

Spurs rookie Dylan Harper, who had 12 points, left the game with a left calf injury with 4:49 remaining in the second quarter and did not return.

Dillon Brooks (core body strain) missed his fourth straight game for the Suns, who also were without guard Jalen Green (hamstring). Green has not played this season. Spurs guard De'Aaron Fox (hamstring) also missed his sixth straight game to begin the season..
