How McDonald’s Grimace Mascot Is Saving New York Mets 2024 Season
The New York Mets have been the story in baseball this week. For once, it’s not bad news.
The famed McDonald’s mascot, Grimace, did not have his birthday celebrated with a milkshake this year. That’s likely due to the viral nature of last year’s promotion, which took the internet by storm for all the wrong reasons.
Instead, the mascot celebrated his birth month by throwing out a ceremonial first pitch at Citi Field on June 12 before the Mets faced the Miami Marlins.
Since that moment, the Mets are 7-0. They’ve won eight of their last 10 games, including a win over the World Series champion Texas Rangers.
Out of nowhere, the Mets are one of baseball’s hottest teams. And it’s all thanks to Grimace.
This first pitch was a local promotion, not orchestrated by the national McDonald's corporation. Diehard baseball fans and lovers of meme culture have anointed Grimace as the savior of this Mets season.
According to Zoomph, social media posts from the MLB, Mets, and McDonalds have earned over 30 million impressions, over 900,000 engagements, and $1.2 million worth of social media value.
Whoever booked this regional appearance for Grimace on a random Wednesday at Citi Field in the middle of summer might just be a genius. It’s the hottest topic in sports right now, being discussed all over major sports programs, podcasts, television shows and even in player interviews.
“The New York Mets have found their savior, and his name is Grimace,” Rich Eisen said on his show.
The Mets are just a half-game out of the last Wild Card spot in the National League.
After being the laughing stock of the league just a short while ago, they are now a feared opponent that nobody wants to face on this hot streak.
All good things must come to an end, and it’s impossible that the Mets can win 100 straight games this season. But if this is the point where their fortune turned around, remember the day that Grimace took the mound.
