Mandatory Credit: Geoff Burke-Imagn Images Italy became the first country to win three consecutive Davis Cups since the United States between 1968-72 with a 2-0 sweep of Spain in Sunday's final in Bologna, Italy.
Even without their two top-10-players in World No. 2 Jannik Sinner and No. 8 Lorenzo Musetti, the Italians prevailed without even needing to contest the doubles point in front of a raucous home crowd.
Matteo Berrettini defeated No. 89 Pablo Carrena Busta 6-3, 6-4 in the opener, needing just 79 minutes. The 54th-ranked player had 13 aces, no double faults and never faced a break point to win his 11th consecutive Davis Cup match.
Flavio Cobolli clinched the title in slightly less dominant but impressively resilient fashion. He lost seven of the first eight games before rallying for a 1-6, 7-6 (5), 7-5 victory over No. 36 Jaume Munar.
Cobolli, who ranks 22nd, won eight of the last 10 points in the match, breaking Munar at 5-5 and then serving out the match with a love game. He saved just one of his four break-point opportunities on his serve while converting just two of the 14 break-point opportunities on Munar's serve.
This Davis Cup title is Italy's fourth in history, denying Spain its first title since 2019 and seventh overall.
World No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz was forced to withdraw before the start of this week's event due to a hamstring injury.
