This goal is the perfect exemplar of why Japan are such a great team. It starts with their pressure high up the pitch, not conceding a single blade of grass to their opponent. As they swarm the Dutch defense en mass and tackle the ball away, the Japanese players immediately transition into attack, arcing through the defense while presenting a number of passing options.
You just have to watch what they do when the ball does get into the box, their patience, the flair they exude with the slightest of touches and non-touches, and then Mizuho Sakaguchi’s uncorked final touch that curved the ball into the back of the net. Just a remarkable passage of play from a remarkable team.
