Jordan Spieth Becomes Youngest American To Win The Open Championship
Photo: Christian Petersen/ [object Object] Jordan Spieth overcame an insane 25-minute odyssey on the 13th hole to shoot five under par over the last five holes and win the 146th Open Championship. Spieth, at just 23 years old, is the youngest American to ever win the tournament.
Things looked pretty bad on the 13th hole. Spieth lost his tee shot well to the right of the fairway, and spent more than 20 minutes wandering around in the wilderness of the dunes, finding his ball, directing spectator traffic, and plotting out an angle of attack to get back near the fairway, before finally taking his second * shot off the damn driving range:
The five-shot bogey on 13 felt like a miracle, and it seemed to invigorate Spieth, who nailed his tee shot on 14, leading to a birdie, then stared down this incredible 48-foot eagle putt on 15:
Matt Kuchar had a chance in hell on 18, but dropped his approach shot in a pot bunker, and that was that. Spieth’s victory makes him the second-youngest player to ever win three legs of the career grand slam. Afterwards, the champ was in a playful mood:
