Juan Martín Del Potro Upsets Novak Djokovic, Gets Incredible Hug
Juan Martín del Potro’s years of injuries have dropped his once-top-five ranking down to #141, but the Argentine showed the skills that marked his early career in downing the world’s #1 player, Novak Djokovic, in straight sets—a result that earned del Potro a lovely embrace and some words that brought him to tears.
The last time these two matched up in a major event, it was the 7-5, 4-6, 7-6, 6-7, 6-3 mindbuster at Wimbledon in 2013. Del Potro’s excelled in the Olympics before; he earned bronze in London (beating Djokovic). We’re happy to see him back, and we’re happy to see that Olympic tennis is still ( inexplicably) awesome. Djokovic, for his part, left the court in tears:
