Toronto led 3-2 after an action-packed first period.
The Maple Leafs opened the scoring at 5:00 on a 2-on-1 started by Morgan Rielly's long breakout pass from behind Toronto's net. Knies fed Nylander, who switched from his forehand to the backhand in the slot before tucking the puck home.
Aho tied the game with a one-timer from the right circle while dipping to a knee during a power play at 8:34 and Jarvis gave Carolina the lead with a laser from the left circle at 14:31.
Toronto rallied with a pair before the period ended.

Carolina rookie defenseman Charles-Alexis Legault cut his hand on Toronto's Nicholas Robertson's skate during a scuffle at the end of the first and did not return.
McCabe's pass to the right edge of the crease set up Matthews' goal at 11:03 of the second period, creating the only two-goal advantage of the game.
But Carolina responded when Walker, who hit a post on a breakaway seven minutes earlier, scored when he lobbed a shot through traffic from the blue line at the 16:51 mark.
Hall pounced on a loose puck in front of the net to tie it just 3:20 into the third period.
