Inter Miami inks noted biter Luis Suarez to deal
source: Getty Images Hungry for more star power, Inter Miami is reportedly finalizing a one-year deal with Uruguayan forward Luis Suarez. The deal was first reported by the Miami Herald.
Suarez, who is turning 37 in January, played with fellow Inter Miami teammates Lionel Messi, Sergio Busquets, and Jordi Alba in Barcelona. Together, Suarez and Messi won four La Liga titles, as well as the 2015 UEFA Champions League title and the 2016 Super Cup title.
According to the report, nothing is currently decided regarding Suarez’s cap situation. Major League Soccer clubs are permitted up to three designated players (DPs) whose salaries exceed the team’s salary cap. Last year, Inter-Miami had the maximum number of DPs allowed: Messi, Busquets, and Gregore. However, according to The Athletic, Miami could buy down Gregore to free up a slot for Suarez.
Suarez played with Brazilian team Gremio last season. Appearing in 52 games and playing 4,557 minutes, Suarez contributed 24 goals and 17 assists. He has reportedly been battling chronic knee issues and recently told Uruguayan radio station 890 Sport that he takes pills and injections to manage the pain.
The Uruguayan also has a habit of biting opponents. Suarez has been suspended a combined 17 games of play for different biting incidents, also going unpunished for a chomp in 2014.
