Mandatory Credit: Wendell Cruz-Imagn Images Despite yet another injury, this time a small fracture on the pinky finger of his left hand, New York Mets catcher Francisco Alvarez still intends on playing in the major leagues down the stretch.
Alvarez was on a rehab assignment at Triple-A Syracuse on Wednesday when he was hit by a pitch and forced to leave the game. He was in Syracuse after he tore the UCL in his right thumb earlier this month. He also started the season on the injured list because of a fracture in his left hand.
According to multiple reports, Alvarez might be able to return and play for the Mets as early as this weekend or by next week.
Alvarez, 23, was batting .265 with seven home runs and 24 RBIs in 56 games with the Mets this season. In four seasons, all in New York, he is a career .230 hitter with 44 home runs and 135 RBIs over 284 games.
Alvarez started all 13 playoff games for the Mets in last season's playoffs as they made a run to the National League Championship Series. He batted .256 in the playoffs with three RBIs and four runs.
