Micah Parsons Trade Vaults Green Bay Packers Into Super Bowl Conversation
When the Green Bay Packers traded two first-round picks to the Dallas Cowboys for superstar pass rusher Micah Parsons, they instantly became legitimate Super Bowl contenders.
Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst was not worried about the draft pick compensation or resetting the defensive end market when he paid Parsons a historic four-year, $188 million contract. Because he knew that the trade he just pulled off will help the Packers contend right now.
In 2023, the 10-7 Packers marched into Jerry’s World and put up 48 points on the Cowboys during their wild-card victory over Dallas. One would imagine that giving up 48 points in the playoffs would affirm that they need to double down on building around Parsons as he enters his prime, but Jerry Jones had other plans, and landed on trading his superstar defender to the very team that ended their season.
On FanDuel Sportsbook, Green Bay’s odds to win the Super Bowl jumped from +1700 to +1300.
That’s quite the nod of respect by adding just one player, especially considering that veteran defensive tackle Kenny Clark was included in the deal.
But the Packers have serious expectations now.
The NFC North looks to be one of the toughest divisions in football.
Surely, the Detroit Lions will be looking to defend their division title with revenge on their mind after being unable to get over the hump and make the Super Bowl. The Minnesota Vikings lost Sam Darnold to free agency, but that will allow them to start developing J.J. McCarthy as their franchise quarterback. While the Chicago Bears probably don’t have actual title aspirations in the first year of Caleb Williams and Ben Johnson, they are probably a force to be reckoned with soon.
But while this division looks to be a gauntlet, maybe the Vikings take a step back. Perhaps the Bears take some time to gel. And we all know Detroit lost both of their coordinators.
Green Bay focused on supporting their franchise quarterback Jordan Love this offseason. Unlike when Aaron Rodgers was in town, the Packers invested a first-round pick into talented Texas wide receiver Matthew Golden. They used another top-100 choice on TCU receiver Savion Williams.
Just last year, the Packers lost to the Philadelphia Eagles in the postseason, who would eventually go on to win the Super Bowl.
With Parsons on the Green Bay sideline, they will be better positioned to actually contend for the Lombardi when the 2025 NFL Playoffs approach.
