One Manchester United Fan Was So Upset By Nani's Red Card, He Called The Police
United washed out of the Champions League yesterday, conceding two backbreaking goals to Real Madrid almost immediately after Nani was sent off for an unintentional boot into the torso of Álvaro Arbeloa. It was controversial as all get-out— you can see the video here—and surely swung the result.
One teenage United fan was infuriated. Beyond infuriated. He felt, in that moment, that referee Cüneyt Çakır had broken the social contract. Just after Nani received the red, the fan dialed 999 (metric for 911) to report a "crime" had occurred. Nottinghamshire police would like to remind you that this is not the appropriate use of the emergency number.
"There may be people out there in real trouble who need our help and they have to wait because we are tied up with calls like this one, reporting a referee from the television.
"It's no joke. In this case, the man realised his bad judgement and apologised and we decided not to pursue it further. But we can and we do prosecute people for wasting police time and making false reports."
The caller reportedly later apologized to police, telling them he had been "caught up in the excitement." If United somehow fall to Chelsea in Sunday's FA Cup tie, he'll likely be calling the International Criminal Court.
