Todd McLellan recorded his first win in two games as Detroit's head coach. McLellan replaced Derek Lalonde, who was fired on Thursday.
Alex DeBrincat had a pair of goals and Lucas Raymond also scored for Detroit. Alex Lyon stopped 26 shots.
Kane is the second U.S.-born player to reach 1,300 career points, trailing only Mike Modano's 1,374. Kane is also the fourth active player to reach that milestone, joining Sidney Crosby, Alex Ovechkin and Evgeni Malkin.
Ovechkin scored for the second consecutive game after missing the previous 16 Capitals contests due to a broken fibula. Ovechkin moved within 24 goals of tying Wayne Gretzky's NHL record of 894.
Nic Dowd had the other Capitals goal. Charlie Lindgren made 23 saves for Washington, which remained one point behind New Jersey for the top spot in the Metropolitan Division.
Detroit led 4-1 after the first period.
The Wings scored just 3:19 into the contest. DeBrincat scored his first goal of the game on a deflection of a Ben Chiarot blast from the left point. Moritz Seider picked up an assist.
Detroit made it 2-0 at 6:44 of the period while on the power play, as Kane found the far post on a shot from the right circle. Erik Gustafsson and Raymond had the assists.
Moments after Lindgren stopped Marco Kasper on a breakaway, Ovechkin put Washington on the board with 7:56 left in the period. He beat Lyon with a slapshot from the left circle off Jakob Chychrun's feed. Connor McMichael had the second assist.
Just 31 seconds later, Kane notched his 1,300th point by setting up DeBrincat in front with a backhanded pass.
Raymond scored less than two minutes later. Lindgren saved a shot by Dylan Larkin but with Lindgren still off his skates, Raymond shoveled in a rebound.
Dowd scored on a backhander midway through the third period.
