Mandatory Credit: David Butler II-Imagn Images Boston Red Sox first baseman Triston Casas underwent a successful procedure to repair his left patellar tendon Sunday.
The team said Casas was seen by Dr. Eric Berkson at Massachusetts General Hospital.
Boston chief baseball officer Craig Breslow told reporters Saturday that Casas was not expected to return this season. A full recovery from this surgery can take 6-12 months.
Casas, 25, ruptured the patellar tendon Friday night during a home game against the Minnesota Twins and had to be helped off the field on a stretcher.
He beat out a check-swing tapper that Twins pitcher Joe Ryan misplayed for an error. After stepping hard on top of the first base bag, his left foot hit the foot of Minnesota first baseman Ty France and Casas fell hard on his left knee.
In 29 games this season, Casas batted .182 with three home runs and 11 RBIs.
Casas also ran into misfortune last season, when he was limited to 63 games due to a left rib cage injury.
In parts of four seasons with the Red Sox (251 games), Casas has batted .241 with 45 homers and 120 RBIs.
Romy Gonzalez has served as Boston's first baseman since Casas' injury. Breslow said "all options are on the table" when it comes to who will take over the position while Casas is out.
