Remember When Pedro Martinez Struck Out 17 Yankees?
Pedro Martinez is being inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame today, alongside Randy Johnson, John Smoltz, and Craig Biggio. As a tribute to one of the greatest, funniest, most dominant, most quote-worthy players of all time, let’s watch him strike out a bunch of Yankees in a complete game one-hitter.
I love looking at the box score from this game, and marveling at Pedro’s utter dominance. Via Baseball-Reference:
In only one inning, the fourth, did he fail to record a strikeout. He struck out the side in three different innings, including the ninth inning, over one hundred pitches into the game. The only hit he gave up was, hilariously, a solo home run to Chili Davis.
Pedro Martinez was the best.
