Mandatory Credit: Rich Barnes-Imagn Images The transfer portal chaos in college basketball could be squeezed into a smaller window through a proposal from the NCAA basketball oversight committee, The Athletic reported Wednesday.
The transfer portal window would be reduced to 15 days as soon as next April, if suggested changes are approved, and would start at the conclusion of the Final Four for both men and women.
The transfer portal is in operation for 30 days and is open in late March while the NCAA Tournament for both men and women is in progress. The men's window was open until April 22 earlier this year, while the women's window was open until April 23.
The new proposal, which still needs to be reviewed by the Division I Cabinet in January, would open the men's window from April 6-20, while the women's window would open one day later and last until April 21.
The new proposal also addresses coaching changes. To match the procedure currently in place in football, a transfer window would open for basketball players five days after a program hires a coach. There would then be a 15-day window for players to let schools know they will enter the portal.
If a school waits at least 30 days to hire a new coach, players would at that point be afforded a 15-day window to enter the portal.
