Reports: Aaron Rodgers likely done with Jets
New York Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers (8) throws his 500th career touchdown pass in the second quarter of the game against the Miami Dolphins on Jan. 5, 2025, in East Rutherford, N.J. The New York Jets and Aaron Rodgers are likely to part ways, ending an unspectacular two-year tenure with the team. per media reports Sunday.
Fox Sports reported that Rodgers flew to New Jersey and met with Jets brass, where the quarterback was informed he doesn't figure into the plans of a new general manager and coaching staff. NFL Network, without confirming the report, said "this appears to be the direction it's heading."
Rodgers joined the Jets amid much fanfare ahead of the 2023 season but suffered a season-ending Achilles injury in the opener. Last season, he rebounded to start all 17 games but the Jets finished only 5-12. He completed 63.0 percent of his passes for 3,897 yards with 28 touchdowns and 11 interceptions.
If he were to stay in New York, he likely would need to agree to a pay cut from his $37.5 million base salary. He was set to become a free agent after the 2025 season.
If the Jets release Rodgers and he wants to continue playing, he should have options. The Las Vegas Raiders and Cleveland Browns are at the top of the list of teams in need of a starting quarterback.
Rodgers spent 18 seasons with the Green Bay Packers before moving on the Jets. The future Pro Football Hall of Fame member ranks in the top 10 in NFL history in many statistical categories.
He is first in passer rating (102.6), fifth in career touchdown passes (503), and seventh in both pass completions (5,369) and passing yards (62,952).
Who potentially could replace Rodgers in New York is up in the air. Per the Jets online roster, veteran backup Tyrod Taylor and Adrian Martinez are the other quarterbacks with the team. Martinez spent last season on the New York practice squad.
According to Spotrac, 37 quarterbacks are due to become free agents -- headlined by one former member of the Jets, Sam Darnold.
The Jets have the No. 7 pick in the April draft.
