Ross Cameron-Imagn Images The New York Yankees focused heavily on their bullpen on trade deadline day, acquiring right-handers David Bednar from the Pittsburgh Pirates, Camilo Doval from the San Francisco Giants and Jake Bird from the Colorado Rockies, according to several reports.
The Yankees now have four relievers with closer experience in their bullpen with Bednar, Doval, Devin Williams and Luke Weaver. The Williams-Weaver duo has combined for 25 saves this season, with Wiliams recording 17 of them.
The Pirates will receive three minor leaguers from New York: top catching prospect Rafael Flores, fellow catcher Edgleen Perez and outfielder Brian Sanchez, per ESPN and the New York Post.
For Bird, the Yankees sent minor league second baseman Roc Riggio and left-handed prospect Ben Shields to Colorado, ESPN reported.
New York surrendered four prospects to San Francisco to land Doval: catcher/infielder Jesus Rodriguez, infielder Parks Harber, right-hander Trystan Vrieling and left-hander Carlos De La Rosa, YES Network reported.
Bednar, 30, is 2-5 with a 2.37 ERA and has 17 saves in 42 appearances for the Pirates this season. The two-time All-Star is 14-23 with a 3.23 ERA and 101 saves in 293 relief appearances over seven seasons with the San Diego Padres (2019-20) and Pirates (2021-25).
Doval, 28, is also not far removed from an All-Star season, when he led the National League with 39 saves for the Giants in 2023. He has gone 4-2 with 15 saves and a 3.09 ERA in 47 appearances this year, striking out 50 batters in 46 2/3 innings. He has 107 saves all-time in five seasons with the Giants (2021-25).
Bird, 29, is 4-1 with a 4.73 ERA in 45 relief appearances this season. He is 11-10 with one save and a 4.57 ERA in 188 games (no starts) since making his MLB debut with Colorado in 2022.
