The Cardinals Lost Their 69th Game
Photo: Jeff Roberson/ [object Object] Anthony Rizzo hit two home runs and Jon Lester pitched eight shutout innings as the Chicago Cubs beat the St. Louis Cardinals, 7-0.
Lester, a notoriously bad hitter, even for a pitcher, cracked an RBI single into center field in the third inning for his eighth career hit and a 1-0 lead. He’s had a lot of success against the Redbirds:
Lester struck out eight while allowing one walk and three hits.
Rizzo did his part on offense with a solo jack in the sixth and a two-run shot in the ninth. Catcher David Ross’s two-run homer and Kris Bryant’s RBI triple filled out the rest of Chicago’s runs.
Cardinals starter Carlos Martinez, who has been the best pitcher in the club’s rotation, gave up four earned runs and eight hits over six innings. Relief pitcher Michael Wacha was responsible for three runs over one inning.
The Cardinals are 76-69 and 33-41 at home. There’s always the next game!
