The Red Sox And Bruins Games Have Been Postponed
Finally, four hours before first pitch/puck drop, the Red Sox and Bruins have announced that tonight's games are postponed. Considering Bostonians aren't supposed to leave their homes and mass transit isn't running, it took them damn well long enough.
The Red Sox were supposed to host the Royals at 7:10. Though David Ortiz earlier told a Globe writer that the game was off, MLB and the team quickly said no decision had yet been made. The Rex Sox had said they were waiting for local officials to make the call, but it became almost absurd as the afternoon stretched on. Finally, at 3:00, the word was given.
Workers would have had to arrive, oh, now to get Fenway and TD Garden ready. They, and fans, might live well out of the city—and need to make other plans for getting in, with MBTA commuter rail service suspended. Subways aren't running, and buses are bypassing the heart of Boston, so even if the games were played, it could be impossible for many fans to get there. The games would also require large security presences, something the city might not be able to spare given the size of the manhunt.
The Bruins' postponement was confirmed by Boston police shortly after the Red Sox made their announcement. Morning skates had already been canceled, and the start of playoff ticket sales was pushed back to Monday. Postponing the game was the last thing the league wanted, as the B's already have to cram in a makeup date for Monday's game. But it's the only thing to be done.
