Rediscovering a forgotten number: "And Reily surely did not know that on a late fall afternoon in the Berkshire Mountains of northwest Massachusetts, seven months before he graduated and went home to die, his young football coach and the college's equipment manager had made an impulsive decision to put away the purple, white and gold number 50 jerseys that he had worn on the field, and that over the next 47 football seasons five more coaches and six more equipment managers would quietly honor that decision, most without knowing why. They would leave the jerseys packed away, unofficially retiring number 50 at a college where numbers were not retired. And one day, quite by accident, the story of Mike Reily's jerseys would be unearthed, and the young man who inspired so many others would come back to life." [Sports Illustrated]

A year in the life of Cam Newton: "His story before November 2010 has drama all its own, and what happens over the next few chapters should be good, too. But taken all together, all at once, what happened in between-over the last 12 months-is as incredible as anything we ever see in sports. So with a shoutout to Katie Baker for inspiring the format here, let's take a look back at the past 365 days of Cam Newton's world. A world filled with money, scandal, an almost surreal amount of overnight success, lots and lots of sports shouting, Cammy Cam Juice, and Hootie." [SBNation]

Bad break for the Giants: "Starting back Ahmad Bradshaw has a cracked bone in his right foot, according to a person briefed on the injury, and his playing status for the future is uncertain. Bradshaw, a fifth-year veteran, left last Sunday's game against Miami to have X-rays on his foot but returned after it was determined that the pain he felt was not because of a structural issue. Bradshaw previously had screws surgically implanted in his foot to help with an old fracture, and he said after the game that he was only feeling irritation around the screw." [New York Times]

Your Italian Laundry Detergent Commercial Interlude:

Oh. So that's it: "As I Am a GM pointed out, Wade made some interesting comments about the 2010-2011 Miami Heat on Mike Krzyzewski's Sirius XM radio show on Wednesday. Shockingly, what he said did not come off as whiny and was actually useful. 'We wanted to win to spite people (last season),' Wade said during the interview. 'I believe that's the reason we didn't win a championship.'" [Larry Brown Sports]
