Tigers give up 4-run lead, rebound to sink White Sox

Colt Keith delivered a go-ahead RBI double in the eighth inning and Riley Greene had three hits and two RBIs to lift the visiting Detroit Tigers to a 5-4 victory against the Chicago White Sox on Wednesday.

The Tigers secured at least a split of the four-game series that concludes Thursday after squandering an early four-run lead.

Keith blooped a double down the left field line against Jordan Leasure as the ball eluded a sliding attempt by Chicago's Andrew Benintendi. Wenceel Perez, whose leadoff double was restored on replay review, scored on the play.

Tommy Kahnle pitched a perfect ninth to earn his eighth save. Winner Will Vest (5-0) struck out three over two scoreless innings.

Chase Meidroth collected three hits and an RBI for the White Sox.

Detroit proved unfazed by a 95-minute rain delay to start the game, sending nine hitters to the plate in the first inning and scoring four runs.

Gleyber Torres and Andy Ibanez started the rally with consecutive doubles against White Sox opener Jared Shuster before Greene grounded a two-run single to left field.

Dillon Dingler and Javier Baez added RBI singles to expand the cushion for righty Sawyer Gipson-Long, who started for the first time in 615 days after recovering from separate 2024 surgeries on his right elbow and left hip.

Gipson-Long shined early, fanning White Sox leadoff hitter Mike Tauchman on three pitches on the way to facing the minimum over two innings.

Tauchman got revenge with an RBI double in the third and scored on Meidroth's run-scoring single one batter later. The White Sox drew within a run in the third on a Josh Rojas sacrifice fly that chased Gipson-Long. Detroit's starter yielded three runs and five hits in 3 2/3 innings with one walk and three strikeouts.

Benintendi's fifth-inning sacrifice fly against Tyler Holton tied the game at 4.

Mike Vasil helped keep the White Sox afloat with 3 2/3 innings of scoreless, two-hit ball after Shuster allowed four runs and five hits in the first inning.

Brandon Eisert (2-1) took the loss, allowing one run and one hit in one inning.
