Mandatory Credit: David Gonzales-Imagn Images The Golden State Warriors are awaiting MRI results on Jonathan Kuminga's right ankle on Sunday, a day after coach Steve Kerr called the injury "a significant sprain."
Kuminga, 22, sustained the injury in Saturday's 121-113 home win over the Memphis Grizzlies, appearing to roll his right ankle late in the second half. He left the arena on crutches and was slated to undergo an MRI.
The fourth-year forward, who scored 13 points on Saturday, is second on the Warriors in scoring while averaging a career-high 16.8 points per game this season.
"It's a sprained ankle," Kerr said. "We'll have more (Sunday). It is not going to be a day-to-day thing. It was a significant sprain. So we'll just have a report (Sunday) once we get a better feel for it."
Kuminga has come into his own this season, recently posting back-to-back career-high 34-point games while also averaging a career-high 5.0 rebounds in 32 games (10 starts).
"I'm just glad we have the depth that we do," Kerr said. "I'm glad we have Kyle (Anderson). There was a reason we signed him and Buddy (Hield). We added a lot of depth for this reason to be able to withstand some injuries.
"It's going to be tough. JK has been playing the best basketball of his career these last couple of weeks, so we're going to miss him. But Kyle will fill in well."
Since he was selected seventh overall by the Warriors in the 2021 NBA Draft, Kuminga is averaging 12.5 ppg, 4.0 rpg and 1.7 assists per game in 243 games (84 starts).
Stephen Curry (bilateral knee injury management) sat out Saturday's game but is expected to play Sunday night against the visiting Sacramento Kings.
Gary Payton II (calf) and Brandin Podziemski (abdominal tightness) are out.
