Watch River Plate's Evacuation From A Hostile Boca Juniors Stadium
River Plate players were stranded nearly two hours on the pitch at La Bombonera in Buenos Aires after yesterday’s Superclásico match in the Copa Libertadores was suspended due to players being attacked by Boca Juniors fans. Here’s how police finally got them off the pitch.
You might ask “why didn’t they just evacuate the stadium?” That’s a good question, and one we don’t have an answer for. Fox Deportes announcers repeatedly called the situation “incompetent,” and the shutdown of Argentinian league play after the death of a player due to an on-field incident earlier this month didn’t make things any more organized. The remaining Boca Juniors supporters hurled garbage at the River Plate players as they escaped the field under guard of riot shields.
This was the third match in 12 days between two of the sporting world’s biggest rivals. Boca Juniors won the first match to take the lead in league play, while River won last week’s first Copa Libertadores leg 1-0. It hasn’t been announced yet when the rest of last night’s suspended match will be played.
