Jon Hamm Channels His Inner Don Draper, Tells Letterman Bullshit Story About Playing Baseball With Roger Clemens
See update from Jon Hamm.
Late in the first season of Mad Men, Jon Hamm's character Don Draper is revealed to be a man whose past is a fabrication. Art became real life, in a way, last night when Hamm dropped by Late Show With David Letterman to promote the long-awaited fifth season of Mad Men (March 25th on AMC!) and during a discussion of his sports background related a story only Dick Whitman could appreciate.
Hamm told Letterman about his attempts to walk-on to the University of Texas baseball team, only to have his dreams of being a Longhorns catcher stymied by the likes of Roger Clemens, whose fastball proved to be a bit much for Hamm to handle. The problem? Clemens left Texas in 1983 when he was drafted by the Red Sox— while Jon Hamm was still in junior high. We called UT to confirm, and they said that Hamm indeed attended school in Austin from 1989 to 1990.
We're not sure why Hamm would try and relate such a story, or if he's so enveloped in the Draper character that making up details from his past is some element of method acting. But we're calling bullshit on this one, Hamm. (We've contacted the Hamm camp on this, and if they get back to us we'll let you know.)
