Adeiny Hechavarria Turned Elastic To Dodge An Easy Tag
Rays shortstop Adeiny Hechavarria, fully recovered from his freak injury last week, blasted straight through his third-base coach’s stop sign while attempting to score a go-ahead run against the Royals, but redeemed himself with an elastic slide that eluded a cannon throw from Jorge Soler and a tag attempt from Salvador Perez. Hechavarria slipped to his right to first avoid Perez’s glove, then contorted himself from the wrong side of the plate while flat on his belly to slip out of the catcher’s recovery.
It looks best from the reverse angle, where you can see Hechavarria essentially pump fake his attempt to touch home twice before sneaking around the glove with his left hand.
This type of chicanery seems like it shouldn’t even be legal. But I’m glad it is.
