Awesome Map: The United States Of America, By Regional Sport
What sport can each state lay claim to? The map above, by Josh Levin and Jess Fink of Slate, attempts to answer this fun but fascinating question, picking 51 sports to dish out across the country. The results range from awesome (mountain climbing in Colorado) to goofy (cornhole in Ohio) to extremely specific (16-inch softball in Illinois). Two things are clear: America's mishmash of regional athletics is part of what makes this country great, except for Delaware (pumpkin chunking), which blows.
It's an interactive map, so go check out it on Slate for write-ups on each sport, plus the "also considered" for each state. We'd have stuck with "jousting" for Maryland, but what are you going to do.
