High School Football Player Dies After Being Struck By Log During Team Exercise
Image via [object Object] A high school football player in Farmingville, N.Y., died today after being hit in the head during a team conditioning exercise that involved players carrying a log overhead.
Joshua Mileto, 16, was a rising junior at Farmingville’s Sachem East High School. Five players were carrying the log during this morning’s offseason workout when it fell and hit Mileto, according to a local police statement obtained by Newsday. He was transferred to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Two hours after Mileto was struck by the log, another player from the team was transported to the same hospital with non-life threatening injuries. It is not clear if the unnamed second player had been participating in the same exercise as Mileto.
According to police, there were six or seven adults—coaches and trainers—present at the workout. Police could not provide Newsday with the weight of the log or any specific information on why it was dropped.
