High Schoolers Don't Realize Blocked FG Is Live, Lose State Semifinal
Last night Monacan High School's football team found out that defeat is even more agonizing when it is self-imposed. They took on regional powerhouse Lake Taylor High School away for the Virginia 4A South Region title, with the winner advancing to the state championship game.
Monacan led 14-12 with just 14 seconds left, but Lake Taylor was on their six-yard line. Lake Taylor attempted what would surely have been the game-winning field goal, but the low drive was blocked by a Monacan player. The entire Monacan team erupted into a wild celebration, apparently failing to notice that the ball had not crossed the line of scrimmage and was therefore still live. Lake Taylor's kicker picked it up, strolled into the end zone, and stole a berth in the state championship game out of Monacan's hands. Oof.
Here's an alternate (vertical) cell phone video of the play from the stands.
