Illinois vs. History: Illini Fans Brace for Another March Madness Heartbreak
To be an Illinois fan is to try to balance eternal optimism with a hate-filled heart.
It is to be uncontrollably drawn to the Final Four spotlight — perhaps 10,000 orange-clad Illini fans made the pilgrimage to Lucas Oil Stadium on Friday morning just to watch the team’s perfunctory shootaround — yet be forced to relive painful memories everywhere you look and desire revenge in the worst way.
Don’t think they haven’t noticed that the other three teams in this Final Four seem like they’re in Indianapolis just to troll Illini fans.
Michigan? That’s the team that stole Illinois’ rightful 1989 NCAA title thanks to Sean Higgins’ last-second putback. The Illini smashed the Wolverines by double figures twice during the regular season, but not when they met in the Final Four semis. Michigan went on to win its first (and only) title.
In a more recent twist of the knife, Michigan is the school that swiped power forward Morez Johnson Jr. in the transfer portal exactly 12 months ago. Johnson had been an Illini since a commitment early in his sophomore year of high school, but after a year on campus he left for more dough and the promise of a more fulfilling role. (Honestly, not even Illini fans could say he made the wrong decision.)
Arizona? That’s the team that denied top-seeded Illinois in the 2001 Elite Eight. Ask any Illini fan and they’ll defame the referees in one breath (“ridiculous that they shot 43 of 56 from the line and six of our guys fouled out”) and the late Bill Walton in another because CBS’ color analyst that day had the audacity not to stifle his enjoyment while watching his son’s team win. Luke Walton scored nine points in 19 minutes off the bench.
UConn? If you type “30-0” into Google, the search engine takes you straight to UConn’s 30-0 run against Illinois in the 2024 Elite Eight. With 1:49 left in the first half, the third-seeded Illini and top-ranked Huskies were tied 23-23. A mere 17 consecutive empty Illini possessions later — they went 0 for 17 from the field with three turnovers — UConn owned a 53-23 lead on its way to back-to-back NCAA titles.
Ouch.
While that forever will rank among the more humiliating stretches in NCAA Tournament history — not even No. 16 seeds suffer a triple killshot like that — it undeniably inspired Illinois to build a more Final Four-worthy squad.
Here was Illinois head coach Brad Underwood’s thought process after his team was played off the TD Garden floor on March 30, 2024:
“Everyone else looks at the Elite Eight [as a big deal],” Underwood told Blue Ribbon. “I’m trying to win a national championship. So I need to figure out how. We walked off the court and I told our staff, ‘If that’s what a national championship team is, we’re not there yet. We’re not there.’
The dominoes started falling soon after.
Underwood rehired Orlando Antigua from Kentucky to be his top assistant. Antigua gave Illinois a second recruiter with extensive connections in Europe, which led to the arrival of 7-foot-1 center Tomislav Ivisic along with two freshmen who were one-and-done: Kasparas Jakucionis and Will Riley.
Tomislav led to the arrival of his 7-foot-2 brother, Zvonimir, as well as starting freshman power forward David Mirkovic. All of Illinois’ other personnel decisions were based on three factors: Positional size, shooting ability and experience.
The Illini constructed the tallest roster in Division I. They use their height to prevent layups and dunks at an elite level. Due to their 3-point prowess, their limited turnovers and the brilliance of freshman point guard Keaton Wagler, the Illini boast the most efficient offense in KenPom.com’s 30-year history.
And experience? If the Illini haven’t learned enough over the course of their 36-game season — in basketball terms, it has been an eternity since their 74-61 loss to UConn on Nov. 28 at Madison Square Garden — when does anyone ever learn enough?
Goodness knows Illinois fans never learn. On one hand, they fervently wish this will be the team that will deliver the school’s first national championship.
Yet they fully expect the other three teams -- together with some gleeful amalgamation of Bruce Pearl, Bill Self and NCAA enforcement employees of old -- to rip their hearts directly out of their chests.
That's the only version of March Madness they know.
