Juwan Howard joins Nets as assistant coach
Michigan coach Juwan Howard reacts to a play during the second half of the 85-70 loss to Nebraska in the regular season finale Sunday, March 10, 2024, at Crisler Center. Former Michigan coach Juwan Howard was one of five assistant coaches added to Brooklyn Nets head coach Jordi Fernandez's staff on Friday.
The team also added Steve Hetzel, Deividas Dulkys, Connor Griffin and Travis Bader to a staff that already included Jay Hernandez, Adam Caporn, Ryan Forehan-Kelly and Corey Vinson.
Fernandez was hired in April to replace interim coach Kevin Ollie, who finished out the 2023-24 campaign after the Nets fired Jacque Vaughn at the All-Star break. Brooklyn finished 32-50 and missed the playoffs for the first time in six seasons.
Howard, 51, coached his alma mater Michigan for the past five seasons, compiling an 87-72 record from 2019-24 that included trips to the NCAA Tournament's Elite Eight (2021) and Sweet 16 (2022). He was named the National Coach of the Year and Big Ten Coach of the Year in 2020-21.
Howard was an assistant coach with the Miami Heat for six seasons (2013-19) before taking over the Wolverines.
After starring as a forward with Michigan's fabled "Fab Five," Howard was the No. 5 overall pick in the 1994 NBA Draft. He spent 19 seasons in the NBA with eight teams, earning All-Star honors with Washington in 1995-96 and winning back-to-back titles with the Heat in 2012-13.
