Monterrey Wins CCL Over Santos Thanks To Four Late Unanswered Goals
Monterrey retained ownership of North America's most prestigious club soccer crown after a stunning comeback against Santos Laguna, including three goals in the final ten minutes of play in the CONCACAF Champions League final.
For 60 minutes, it seemed Santos (which features American striker Herculez Gomez) would finally win in its fifth CCL final appearance, holding onto a 2-0 lead thanks to goals by Carlos Quintero and Felipe Baloy. Aldo de Nigris finally found the back of the net for Monterrey to narrow the lead to 2-1, but it wasn't until the 84th minute when an equalizer from Neri Raúl Cardozo brought the hometown crowd to its feet.
Moments later, de Nigris earned his brace—and the championship trophy—with a header off a set piece. (Humberto Suazo added an insurance goal in added time.) It's a crushing loss for Santos Laguna, who failed in last year's final against Monterrey and would have taken the title even if they'd managed a draw thanks to the aggregate away goals rule (last week's tie in Coahuila ended 0-0). Monterrey moves on to represent North America in the FIFA Club World Cup. [Univision]
