Nick Sirianni, Jalen Hurts, and the Questions Facing the Philadelphia Eagles in 2026
Just one year ago, the Philadelphia Eagles were on top of the sports world after winning the second Super Bowl in their franchise’s history. They exacted revenge on the Chiefs and seemed primed to continue to dominate the sport for the foreseeable future.
Now, twelve months later, the honeymoon phase has ended in Philly, and the team is left with a lot of uncomfortable questions.
The Eagles were bounced from the playoffs after a close 23-19 Wild Card loss to the 49ers. During Sunday’s loss, the usual suspects were once again problematic in the biggest moments of the season.
Nick Sirianni and Kevin Patullo once again struggled to call an effective offensive game. The Eagles' defense came on strong down the stretch and seemed ready to once again be the catalysts for another playoff run for Philly. Unfortunately, the offense could only muster 19 points, despite having great field position and multiple opportunities to put the Niners away.
Those two weren’t the only problems on offense.
Jalen Hurts had a pretty disappointing day, going 20/35 passing with only 168 yards through the air. It was the 10th time this season that Hurts was held under 200 yards passing.
The play-calling and offensive scheming were far worse than last season, but the o-line injuries and poor play from the receivers deserve some blame, too.
AJ Brown was very vocal with his displeasure with the play calling all season long, but in the biggest moment of the season, he had three drops. It’s too early to say that Brown will not be in Philly next season, but the situation between him and the Eagles looks ugly.
It might be better for both sides if Brown were sent to a different organization. Then again, look how well that worked out for the Titans.
I don’t think Sirianni should be fired, but he needs to make a better hire at OC next season. It can’t be a situation where he’s hiring another buddy that’s already on staff, and having a repeat of this past season.
Hurts was worse this season, but coaches like Shane Steichen and Kellen Moore already proved that Hurts can be good enough to take you far in the postseason.
You would have thought Sirianni would have learned from this mistake after the Brian Johnson disaster that occurred after moving on from Steichen. If Sirianni can’t find a better option at play-caller in 2026, a fiery Philly fan base will be calling for blood.
The Eagles still won the division this season, and their defense showed they were good enough to contend. This isn’t a roster that needs to be blown up.
I think a new coordinator might be the easy fix for this team. If a new coordinator isn’t the fix, Sirianni and Hurts will be facing a lot of heat this time next season.
