Mandatory Credit: Bob Donnan-Imagn Images New York City FC forward Alonso Martinez sustained a knee injury while on duty with Costa Rica's national team on Thursday, the MLS club confirmed Saturday.
Multiple reports indicated that Martinez, 27, tore his ACL during a training session.
"Martinez has returned to New York City for further evaluation. Additional updates will be provided in the coming days," NYCFC said in a statement. "Everyone at the Club sends their well wishes to Alonso."
Depending on the severity of the injury, Martinez seems likely to miss New York City's Eastern Conference semifinal match against the Philadelphia Union on Nov. 23.
Martinez led NYCFC with a career-high 17 goals in 30 matches (29 starts) during the regular season and scored two more goals during the first-round playoff victory against Charlotte FC.
His absence also would be a big blow to Costa Rica as it seeks qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Martinez has recorded eight goals in 30 career caps.
