Phillies Catcher Carlos Ruiz Tests Positive For Use Of An Amphetamine, Suspended 25 Games [UPDATED]
That's the word out of the MLB office this afternoon, according to a statement issued a few minutes ago. There's no indication what type of banned stimulant Chooch took, or when the test was taken. Jim Salisbury of CSN Philly just reported that it has to be a second positive test to merit a suspension, though there's also no indication of the first positive, which the league keeps secret. Ruiz was an all-star last season, when he posted a career-best WAR of 4.4. The suspension takes effect at the beginning of the 2013 season, though Ruiz will be eligible to participate in and compete during spring training. Per Jayson Stark, Ruiz has issued a statement saying he intends to serve the suspension.
Update (6:09 p.m.): The Philadelphia Inquirer says Ruiz tested positive for Adderall.
