Mandatory Credit: Kevin Ng-Imagn Images Seattle Seahawks cornerback Riq Woolen committed a taunting penalty costly to his team during the NFC Championship Game against the visiting Los Angeles Rams on Jan. 25.
It has proven personally costly, too, as the NFL has fined Woolen $17,398 for his penalty following a third-down stop. The infraction turned a likely punting situation into an automatic first down for the Rams, who scored on the next play. Puka Nacua beat Woolen for a 34-yard touchdown reception with 2:06 remaining in the third quarter that cut Seattle's lead to four points.
The Seahawks were able to overcome those plays and hold on for a 31-27 victory to advance to Super Bowl LX to face the New England Patriots on Feb. 8.
A Pro Bowl selection during his rookie season in 2022, Woolen had 41 tackles and one interception in 16 games (seven starts) this season. He posted two solo tackles and two pass breakups in the NFC title game.
