Southend Win League Two Playoff Final With Bonkers Finish
Despite being down 1-0 with just 20 seconds of added time remaining in extra time, Southend United earned promotion to England’s League One thanks to some magic at Wembley Stadium.
That magic came courtesy of Joe Pigott, whose goal in the 32nd minute of extra time equalized Wycombe at 1-1 after Southend’s keeper Dan Bentley conceded an own goal five minutes into the period. That led to a penalty shootout that went to 7-6, with Bentley redeeming himself by saving Sam Wood’s attempt from the spot. (One of Southend’s seven PK scores came from the guy who needed 22 stitches after this, just two weeks ago.)
With Southend showing no hopes of scoring and their destiny of remaining in League Two seemingly in hand, lots of their fans left Wembley early, then scrambled to try to get back in:
