Swiss Steal A Victory With Goal In The Final Seconds Of Extra Time
Just when it looked like Switzerland and Ecuador were content to see off a fairly boring, poorly played draw, the Swiss rode a barnstorming counter in literally the last few seconds of the match to win 2-1.
The final minute was the most exciting of the entire game. In Switzerland's possession right before the decisive one, they pushed forward to try to get the winner, only to lose the ball in midfield. The ball ended up at the feet of Antonio Valencia, Ecuador's best player, who was streaking towards the Swiss goal. Valencia cut the ball back into the box, found teammate Michael Arroyo alone in front of goal, but Arroyo wasn't able to sort his feet out and the ball was tackled away.
From there, Valon Behrami took off towards the opponent's goal. An Ecuador player tried to foul him, but the ref played the advantage and allowed Switzerland to pour forward. Behrami found substitute striker Haris Seferovic, who picked a pass to the opposite wing to Ricardo Rodriguez and sprinted towards goal. Rodriguez took a couple touches and swung in a cross that got to a juuuust onside Seferovic:
The striker roofed the cross into the net, and Switzerland were saved. He tested them, but God is still Swiss.
